Following the most recent green power auction, the UK will get nine new offshore wind farms.
Officials have highlighted that the most recent surge of clean energy initiatives, which encompass onshore wind and solar farms, has the potential to provide electricity to 11 million households in the UK. Following the Government's most recent renewables auction, Britain is poised to receive nine new offshore wind farms. However, campaigners express concerns that it may not meet the clean power objectives.
The nine new projects are in contrast to none last year, and include Hornsea 3 and Hornsea 4, which will be the largest and second largest wind farm projects in Europe, located off the Yorkshire coast. The offshore sector is now "back on its feet," according to Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, who also noted that the projects are "essential to give energy security to families across the country."
Considering how costly clean projects can be, developers compete to guarantee a rate, also known as the strike price, for each megawatt hour (MWh) of energy that their project will generate in the ensuing years.
However, despite this, the government was criticised since the total energy produced by the most recent round of projects is less than that of previous rounds. About 9.6 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy will be produced by the new projects, as opposed to 11GW in an auction of similar size in 2022.
The offshore wind energy industry is dynamic and quickly growing, and is in need of more skills, expertise and knowledge to support these new developments.
