The Group focuses on ME&I Services, Information & Communications Technology Services which covers the installation, upgrade and management of voice, data and communications systems and Technical FM.

Spie is focussed on four markets;  Smart cities, E-fficient buildings, Energies including nuclear, renewables, Oil & Gas and Industrial services. SPIE UK provides energy and environmentally focused solutions across multi-technical and support services from initial design, installation, testing, commissioning to long term operations &maintenance. Spie UK employs more than 3500 people from regional offices throughout the UK.

The Role

General Manager

The Challenge

We were tasked to find a confidential General Manager reporting to the Operations Director and working within the overall c. £80m Industrial Services business. The GM’s role was to lead a business unit of c £15m, to develop strategies and plans to deliver the goals and financial targets of the business unit. Create the Development Strategy to generate the required growth and profitability targets, oversee and direct large-scale complex and important new contracts and to develop a strong delivery and Customer Service culture throughout the division.

The Solution

We utilised a range of strategic search processes in competitors, making approaches to the right people, plus supporting the campaign by a range of confidential and bespoke global marketing of the position. From there, we gained up to 60 strong expressions of interest, held 18 competency based interviews and met with 7 of the best people. We were able to provide a validated shortlist to Spie.

We appointed a dynamic and high potential executive within a recognised global engineering and consulting group with market leading operations across EMEA and US. He had consistently sustained revenue and EBITA growth, building high performance teams and championing service excellence. Steve has a proven track record leading transformation change and growth programmes - requiring a deep understanding of similar energy markets, industries and sectors to Spie so was seen as an excellent fit. He has done an excellent job to this day for Spie and been promoted to a more senior position. We have kept in close communication post appointment with Spie to ensure his success in the role.
